STS 122: Day Five

This morning at about 0930 EST, (1530 in Baumholder, Germany) the STS 122 first space walk should begin–baring delays. I have watch much of this mission on NASA-TV. Believe it or not, I have had better results downloading the feed from Space.com. Wake up today is set for 0445 EST (1045 in Baumholder, Germany).

I am excited to watch this space walk–many times I am not able to pay attention, either because I am at work or I don’t know that it is happening. There is a temptation to blow it off because these are somewhat routine and a slow process–but think about what occurs. Here we have these individuals orbiting around the Earth at a high speed, in a suit providing their life-support, attached to the space craft, and walking around get their work done. When you stop and think about what is truly happening –it is amazing.
