R.G. Lee, once wrote;
Do you know that newspapers do not measure people—only exhibit them?
Do you know that newspapers are a sort of public confessional?
(from “Pickings” by R.G. Lee, 1938)
Of course, much has changed since 1938, but in many ways the press is still the press and Newspapers are still a driving factor in news writing. So, I think Dr. Lee remains to have a valid point. Newspapers ARE a public confessional!
You see the worst of society in the news. You see the tragedies that are caused from our own sin before God and our rebellion against him. There are the shootings in schools, the sexual assaults, and the infidelity—even in our State and National leadership. We see where we are headed in the news.
However, we do not hear what we should do about it. The press, to some degree make their money on their money on bad news and sensationally bad news is even better. But, they never tell you what can be done about the bad news, the personal tragedies, and the sin that is in our life.
Only the Bible can tell us where to find hope—yes, there are books out there, but if they don’t point to the Bible they are simply good advice or interesting thoughts on how to cope. The Bible gives us hope because the Bible tells us about the solution to our sin—and that is Christ.
The Bible says;
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 Jn 1:9, ESV)
So look at your personal newspaper—what is calling attention to you today?
Have you confessed it?
